Meet Nurse Poppy
I wanted to hit the reset button when…
We found out my child’s middle school had a case of COVID-19.
As we were self quarantining at home, our daughter began to run a fever. I couldn’t help but wonder, “How many people in my situation don’t have access to a mask?”
As a nurse, public health educator, and parent, I am on a mission to promote the idea that with tiny steps we can beat this virus and that people of any skill level can safely make masks to use in the case that no medical grade mask is available to you.
From research we know that hand-sewn masks are not as effective as medical-grade masks, but they do provide some protection. As of July 2020, hospitals in the U.S. continue to struggle with shortages of personal protective equipment PPE, homemade masks save essential equipment for frontline workers. During this pandemic, where many people contract COVID-19 we have a lot of power to fight this virus— it’s tiny but we are smarter.
As of April 3, 2020 the CDC has begun promoting the benefits of everyone wearing masks, but we need more than masks, we need kind, accurate, support and guidance on how to survive, thrive, and ultimately beat COVID-19. Please take a bit of time on the site to peruse our heart centered, science savvy articles, here are a few that feel especially current:

I am a Registered Nurse and hold my Masters in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where I had the privilege of working as a research assistant to a team of researchers that included doctors and epidemiologists from Yale, UMass, and UConn that were dedicated to reducing the spread of disease in at-risk communities.
